Biographical Sketch: Kilpatrick served as head of the English Department at Troy State University, 1937-1961. Born in 1890 in Camden, AL, Kilpatrick was an attorney, a legislator, a professor, and served as an interpreter at the Peace Conference that ended World War 1 via the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. Afterward, he worked for the Red Cross in Eastern Europe and with the YMCA attached to the White Army in the Russian Civil War. He was captured and imprisoned by the Red Army, 1920-21. Sentenced to death as a spy, he was able to message the US Government who affected his release.
Received his BA from Maryville College, his MA from Johns Hopkins University in 1923, his PhD from University of Paris in 1924. Represented Perry County in the AL Legislature, 1923-27; taught at University of South Carolina 1925-36, and at Troy State 1937-61. Kilpatrick died in 1968.

Scope / Content: Eight files of biographical materials about Kilpatrick. One printed, bound copy of Treaty of Versailles, 1919, in English and French.
Provenance: Treaty presented to Kilpatrick for his work as a translator at the Peace Conference, brought to Troy State University when he served as English Department Chair (1937-61), then either left at Troy or given to Troy. Gen. Walter Givan (Troy Dir. of Development) found the treaty when cleaning out an office. Givan presented it to the Troy Library which deposited it in the Wiregrass Archives.
