Guide to the Queen E. Amos Collection, 1954-2016

Record Group 215

Extent:  496 digital images @ 600 dpi TIFs, full color

Biographical Sketch:  Ms. Amos, a resident of Coffee County, AL, supplied these family photographs and documents to be scanned as part of the NEH-funded "Wiregrass Common Heritage Project" of the Wiregrass Archives and ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV Dothan Campus History Department. The Project held two Community Scanning Days, June 18 and 25, 2016. Ms. Amos was born in Pike County, AL, in 1949 and resided in Geneva and Coffee counties before becoming an adult. She graduated from Riverside Heights High School in Geneva County, AL, 1967, then served in the Women's Army Corps (WAC), 1969-1972. After basic and advanced individual training (AIC) at Ft. McClellan, AL, she was stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC, and worked as a personnel specialist. [Nb: WAC was disbanded in 1978 with all units absorbed into the US Army, see "Women's Army Corps," Wikipedia, accessed February 2, 2017, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women's_Army_Corps ]

Ms. Amos enrolled at Enterprise State Community College in 1972, then graduated from Troy State University in 1981. Her career as a civilian employee at Ft. Rucker, AL, spanned 35 years. She worked as a clerk in Civilian Personnel, a Library Technician, a Claims Specialist, and finished as a Management Analysis, retiring in March 2006.

Ms. Amos married and divorced twice and has no children.  Her mother is Mary Amos (1913-2001) who began their ongoing collection of obituaries and funeral programs from family and friends who had lived in Coffee, Geneva, and Pike counties in Alabama.

Scope / Content Note:  Obituaries and funeral programs for Amos family members and friends.  Photographs curated by donor for contribution to the Wiregrass Common Heritage Project, a NEH-funded scanning project conducted by the Wiregrass Archives in 2017.  Also contains an alumni reunion program and yearbook from Riverside Heights High School, and miscellaneous family records and genealogical manuscripts.

Organization: Organized into 4 series:

1. Funeral Programs, 1963-2016 (135 items).  Funeral programs, obituaries, and similar items collected by the donor's mother then passed to her.  Organized by family members and friends; arranged alphabetically.

2. Photographs per Wiregrass Common Heritage Project, 1957-1985 (19 items).  Ms. Amos curated 19 images from her larger collection to contribute to the Wiregrass Common Heritage Project in June 2017.

3. Riverside Heights High School (Geneva, AL), 1967, 1991.  2 items.  Riverside Heights High School began in 1938 as the Geneva Colored School, then became the African American high school for Geneva County, AL, 1957-1970, after which school desegregation could no longer be avoided. Contains Ms. Amos's RHHS yearbook for 1967 and the reunion program for 1991.

4. Amos Family Genealogical Information, 1954 – 2009 (14 items).  Records and manuscripts pertaining to various family members and friends, plus an article about Union Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Pike County, and two more pencil sketched portraits.

Provenance: The Wiregrass Common Heritage Project volunteers and Wiregrass Archives staff member Tina Bernath scanned these items after Ms. Amos brought the scrapbook to the June 18, 2016, Community Scanning Day. After returning the scrapbook to her, Dr. Olliff realized the Wiregrass Archives overlooked a number of funeral programs. Ms. Amos provided the scrapbook a second time and staff completed the project.
