Guide to the Mallalieu Seminary Records, 1887-1927

Historical Sketch: Founded in 1882 near Rocky Creek Methodist Church, Kinsey, Henry County, Alabama, for educational purposes, the school was first known as Forest Home Seminary. The school covered roughly seven acres and was supported by the Methodist Episcopal Church, North. When the school burned in 1885 it was rebuilt and renamed after Bishop Willard Francis Mallalieu. Mallalieu Seminary was one of the few institutions of higher learning in Southeast Alabama, teaching grades 1-12 and offering courses on Greek, Algebra, Latin, History, Chemistry, Music, Geology and the New and Old Testament. The Mallalieu Seminary closed on October 31, 1923 when the Methodist Episcopal Church, North could no longer financially support the school.
